Our history & heritage
Founded as the Hughes Springs Methodist Episcopal Church South, ours was the first church in Hughes Springs — and for more than 150 years it has stood as a monument to this town's story.
Our significance
A monument to its history
The Hughes Springs Methodist Episcopal Church South, in 1873, was the first church in Hughes Springs. It was founded by John H. McLean, one of the leaders of Methodism in early Texas history.
Beginning in 1876, it hosted the school for the community. It was the backbone of the town, which was founded later in 1877, by the Hughes family.
The Hughes Springs Methodist Church has been serving the community since 1873 through World Wars, the Great Depression, Korean War, Regional Conflicts, and pandemics. This church aids those in Hughes Springs and surrounding towns through different ministries.
This church has provided shelter for those in need during challenging times, provides a food program for the hungry and has children’s clothing, diapers ministry. This church has had a significant impact on the development of this town, the lives of its citizens and stands as a monument to its history.

The same calling
Still serving our neighbors today
More than 150 years on, the heart of this church hasn't changed — to love God and serve our neighbors. Today that looks like a food pantry for the hungry, a diaper and children's clothing ministry for local families, and a church family that shows up for one another and for our community.
Today, Hughes Springs Methodist Church is a congregation of the Global Methodist Church — still rooted in the same calling that began in 1873: loving and serving God by loving and serving others.
